I am Maosu (Eric) Li (李茂粟), an incoming Assistant Professor at the Thrust of Urban Governance and Design, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou).

I am also a University Research Committee (URC) Post-doctoral Fellow with the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the University of Hong Kong.

My research interests lie in AI + 3D City, focusing on Urban Informatics, Computing, and Analytics through i) 3D City Information Modeling, ii) Machine Learning, and iii) Data Management and Analysis.

Fully funded PhD students to start in Spring (January) or Fall (September) 2026.

💻 Background: 3D GIS, computer science, photogrammetry and remote sensing, spatial/geographic statistics, computational urban planning, or computational architectural/urban design.

🌟 Advantage: Strong research experience in 3D GIS, City Information Modeling (CIM), AI, graph methods, and Large Language Models (LLMs).

💻 Research directions:

– 1) 3D GIS/CIM/AI-assisted smart city and digital twin applications
– 2) 3D CIM-supported urban big data AI and statistical analysis

💰 Funding: RMB 15,000 per month for up to 4 years. Early graduation is encouraged.

Apr 21, 2024	Glad to win the Gold Medal with Prof. Yeh and Frank at the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions 2024. Our winning project title is “Automatic AI generation of photorealistic window views and openness indexes using 3D City Information Models (CIM).”
Mar 4, 2024	Maosu received both HKU Foundation Publication Award for Research Postgraduate Students 2023 and Best Poster Presenter Award at the HKU Research Postgraduate Symposium 2024 cum Award Presentation Ceremony held on March 4th in Lecture Hall II, Centennial Campus. Many thanks.
